Toys for Tots Expands Literacy Program for Underprivileged Kids
Toys for Tots is continuing to tackle illiteracy.
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is expanding its initiatives with the launch of Operation Turning Page, a program expanding on Toys for Tots’ existing Literacy Program that will provide underprivileged kids with books and other educational resources.
“It’s a sad fact that over 60% of poverty-stricken children don’t have access to age-appropriate books and educational materials at home,” says Lt. Gen. Jim Laster, President and CEO of The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “Thanks to our volunteers and generous supporters, Toys for Tots is making it our mission to help children and families achieve a brighter future. Working together, we can turn the page on poverty.”
The initiative is aimed at preventing “summer slide” — when kids lose up to a third of their learning progress from the previous school year over the summer — and the childhood illiteracy epidemic.
Toys for Tots’ current Literacy Program also bolsters local libraries, schools, and existing literacy programs.
