Shoppers can bag huge bargains at Wilko after its 'closing down' sale was extended. The chain, which has collapsed into administration, is now offering up to 50 per cent off items that had already been discounted.

Although 'several rescue bids' have reportedly been put forward, a new buyer for Wilko is yet to be found - putting more than 400 shops at risk of closure. The future is also uncertain for its 12,500 employees, who are now facing redundancy.

The budget retailer's sale was launched last week, but further discounts have now been added. Christmas decorations have been slashed by 50 per cent, while there is a 30 per cent saving on toys, garden, stationary and seasonal items.

Other ranges benefitting from a 20 per cent discount include decorating, DIY, home adornment, housewares and kitchen. You can see what BirminghamLive reporter, Dayna Farrington, thought of the sale here.

Administrators from PwC set a deadline of Wednesday, August 16, for potential bidders to register their interest but the insolvency process is continuing as the firm assesses options for the retailer and its assets. GMB Union representatives, who have met the company and its administrators as part of the consultation process, indicated that a deal could be struck.

Andy Prendergast, GMB's national secretary, said: “We can confirm there have been expressions of interest from organisations who are considering taking over at least some parts of the business. These are still at an early stage, but means there are genuine grounds for hope. Whilst this process continues staff will continue to be paid and kept on. All stores are continuing to trade, and deliveries of new stock will continue.”
