Warner Bros. Pictures turned the page on a lackluster 2025 box office, with video game-themed family actioner A Minecraft Movie selling a record $157 million in projected opening weekend ticket sales through April 6.
Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the movie — based on the Minecraft video game — generated an additional $144 million in foreign revenue, upping the worldwide debut above $301 million — for than twice the reported $150 million production budget, excluding marketing.
The tally not only ranks No. 1 at this year’s box office, replacing Disney’s Captain America: Brave New World, it exceeds the record $143 million opening for Universal Pictures/Illumination’s A Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023.
The movie also snapped Warner’s string of theatrical misfires, led by Robert Pattinson’s Mickey 17 and Robert De Niro’s The Alto Knights.
“The film is drawing like a coveted five-quadrant movie, appealing broadly to everyone — younger and older adults, as well as young teens and kids,” David A. Gross, analyst with FranchiseRE, wrote in a post. “Reviews are not good, but these pictures are made for moviegoers, not critics. When a release catches fire like this, it generates its own momentum and you can set aside all projections.”
At No. 2 over the weekend is former chart topper, Amazon MGM Studios’ Jason Statham actioner A Working Man with $7.2 million. The movie now has sold almost $28 million in tickets across two weekends.
Faith-based The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 2 from Fathom Entertainment rounded out the weekend podium with $6.7 million in projected revenue, upping its two weekend tally (with Part 1) north of $17 million.
Box office challenged Snow White continues to freefall, generating $6 million in third-weekend ticket sales, to up its North American tally around $77 million ($168 million globally. The $250 million budget movie, starring starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, continues to struggle equaling its production costs.
Universal/Blumhouse horror release The Woman in the Yard added $4.5 million, to up its 10-day tally past $17 million on a reported $12 million production budget.
Finally, Jack Quaid’s Novocaine grossed an estimated $280,000 from 514 domestic locations through April 6, in addition to $2.5 million across 72 foreign markets for $2.78 million total, and $32.25 million since launching March 15.
